Well, I guess I’m not alone.
Facebook has officially taken over so much of our lives. As a whole, young
adults spend mindless amounts of time on Facebook. Most of the time, all we do
is creep. . .literally. I’m not by any means saying that Facebook is a horrible
network that is making our generation stupid. On the contrary, Facebook has
many benefits. Sharing your photos, communicating with people far away, sharing
your opinion, even getting informed on new trends and world happenings. Yet the
truth is, most of the time we spend of Facebook, is actually quite useless.
Hundreds of clicks each day are spent peeking in on the lives of others…even
if they aren’t that interesting. We’ve become expert creepers. We know all the
gossip. Hands down, the most prominent and widely used website was Facebook.
But Facebook stalking isn’t satisfying enough, we need other websites to
entertain us. Some of the most common social, entertaining websites are
StumbleUpon, Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube, Skype, and Netflix. Students don’t just
use one of the websites, they use almost all of them! And I can’t exclude myself from this bunch.
I’m just as hooked. Is this an efficient use of our time? Or is it mainly time
wasted? At this point, it’s become so normal…it’s hard to tell. The Internet
has become a huge way to entertain ourselves, whether it be from boredom or
procrastination from our other tasks. But I noticed that we do use the Internet
for more useful motives. The Internet has become the easiest way to do research
and complete all of our homework tasks. Along with my classmates, the Internet
was helpful for getting our homework done and we were able to use online tools
to do so. Not only does the Internet allow us to easily finish school
assignments. It allows us to communicate with professors, companies, etc. via
e-mail etc. One of the common uses of the Internet that caught my eye that was
different to me was checking sports stats. Considering the US is such a
sports-crazed country, keeping up to date with one’s favorite sports is made
simpler through the Internet. Moreover, we use the Internet to keep ourselves
informed of global/ local happenings. Reading news articles helps us stay
notified about the world around us. In
the end, the internet is truly used for EVERYTHING. Boredom, entertainment,
eavesdropping, curiosity, accomplishing tasks, becoming informed, and
communication are all made possible by the great phenomena of the Internet.
