The New York Times and the blogs I
have been following, “Borderland Beat” and “El Blog del Narco”, are most surely
a part of the news-press sphere. Both of these sources, especially the New York
Times, have the purpose of informing its audience about certain occurrences in
the world. They help their audience: create a conscience, form opinions, become
active citizens, etc. Indeed, one forms a relationship between the “news” and
themselves.
So how do the New York Times and
these blogs form part of the news-press sphere? Well, for starters, they are
both sources that keep us informed, and they are part of one of many forms of
“news”.
Each of these sources, actually uses
many of the other components of the news-press sphere when creating their final
product: articles/blog posts. For example, both of them use government sources.
Additionally, in the New York Times, for example, companies ask to advertise a
certain product, sell the paper information, or even pay to be portrayed a
certain way. Witnesses and observers provide reporters information about
certain events, occurrences, etc. Additionally, data helps them provide correct
accounts of events, people, places, etc. All of the examples previously given,
compose what Jarvis calls the “news sphere”.
I would consider the New York Times
and the blogs to be part of the sector called the “press”. The press by
definition is all of the media and agencies that print, broadcast, or gather
and transmit news, including newspapers, newsmagazines, radio and television
news bureaus, and wire services.
Truly, there are many ways to receive
and transmit news, but one of the most significant is definitely the New York Times.
Although the blogs also provide us with valuable information they are not on as
large and global of a scale as The New York Times.
